Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon are three of the most common names in composite decking, and each one offers several board lines at different looks and price points. If you are planning a deck in Union, Wildwood, Chesterfield, or anywhere around our part of Missouri, here is how to narrow down the choice.
Why Homeowners Choose Composite
Composite decking is built to skip the yearly sanding, staining, and sealing that wood decks need. It resists rot and splintering, and it holds its color better than untreated wood. For a lot of families, that means more weekends on the deck and fewer weekends working on it.
Composite usually costs more up front than pressure-treated lumber. The trade-off is lower upkeep over the life of the deck.
Compare Board Lines, Not Just Brands
Each brand makes multiple product lines, from entry-level boards to premium options. The differences show up in surface texture, color variation, how the board handles heat and scratches, and warranty coverage.
Because of that, comparing brands alone does not tell you much. A premium board from one brand may have more in common with a premium board from another than with an entry board from its own lineup. Narrow down the level of board you want first, then compare colors and textures across brands.
Look at Real Samples Outside
Colors on a screen rarely match the real thing. Look at physical samples, and look at them outside, in the light your deck will actually get. A board that looks warm in the showroom can read darker or cooler on a sunny south-facing deck.
Also think about heat. Darker boards generally get hotter in direct summer sun than lighter ones. If you walk barefoot on the deck, that matters.
Think About How You Use the Deck
A deck for grilling and quiet mornings has different needs than a deck that hosts big gatherings, a hot tub, or kids and dogs running back and forth. High-traffic decks benefit from boards with tougher surfaces. Decks with furniture that moves around often benefit from textures that hide scuffs.
Talk through your plans with your builder. The right board is the one that fits how your family lives, not just the one with the nicest photo.
The Frame Matters as Much as the Boards
Composite boards look great, but they sit on a frame, and that frame carries everything. Footings need to be set properly, joists and beams need to be sized for the span, and the connection to your house needs to be flashed so water stays out. Joist spacing also has to meet the board manufacturer's requirements.
A premium board on a weak frame will not perform the way it should. Framing is our core trade, so this is the part of every deck we refuse to rush.
